12-volt battery mounted in trunk - Used to start gasoline engine and runs accessories when engine is off

For better overall weight distribution, the Hybrid's regular 12-volt battery is located in the trunk. It's found under the hood in regular Sonata models. In the Hybrid, this 12-volt battery serves the same purpose in supplying power to start the gasoline engine and run accessories like the radio or headlights when the engine is turned off and the car is parked.

S
Virtual Engine Sound System (VESS)
Audible alert sound during low-speed electric vehicle operation for pedestrian safety (under 18 MPH)
  — Transmits an artifical engine noise when activated or
when the vehicle is operating in silent EV only mode
  — Enhances safety to pedestrians, alerting them of vehicle
      approaching.

Brakes
Regenerative Braking System
Dual-diagonal, split circuit, power assisted w/hydraulic booster, cooperative control corresponding to regenerative braking torque

Converting the kinetic energy into electrical energy rather than thermal energy through the friction brakes reduces the wear on the brake linings so they last longer.
S
Front - Ventilated Disc (diameter)
11.8"
Single piston, floating drums
Rear - Ventilated Disc (diameter) 11.2"
Single piston, floating drums
ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Traction Control System (TCS).

4 wheels/4 channels/4 sensors

ABS helps the driver maintain steering during emergency braking situations.
EBD - 4-wheels/ 4-channels/4-sensors (brake force applied independently to each wheel).
TCS automatically reduces wheel spin under acceleration by reducing the throttle opening and/or applying the brakes.
S

Electronic Stability Control (ESC) w/Brake Assist

ESC will automatically apply brake force to the appropriate wheel(s), retard timing and reduce throttle, if needed to help drivers maintain control of the vehicle during unforeseen driving conditions.
Brake Assist - Provides maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected.

S
Parking Brake
Type (Drum-in-hat)
Mechanical
Steering
Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS) - Column mounted.

MDPS is fuel saving and has less noise than hydraulic power steering.
S
Type Rack &
pinion
Power Assisted, Engine-RPM-Sensing

Steering assist is less when vehicle is driven straight, avoiding over-sensitivity; Assist increases during low-speed maneuvering to reduce the amount of steering effort required by the driver
