The Sonata Hybrid Blue Drive is the first and only hybrid to use superior lithium polymer battery technology, leapfrogging competitive hybrids.

The Sonata Hybrid's lithium polymer batteries are superior to the nickel-metal hydride and lithium-ion batteries used in competitive hybrids. Lithium polymer batteries are more durable, space-efficient and weight-efficient.

    • Industry's First Lithium Polymer Batteries:
       — Powerful and hold charge 25% longer than
           non-lithium batteries
       — Durable, space efficient and light weight
       — 95.9 lb. vs. Toyota Camry Hybrid's 123.9 lb.
       — Less heat during charging and use
       — Maintenance-free for at least 10 years or 150,000 miles
       — Can use gas engine and/or electric motor up to highway

    • Advantages over Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries used in competitor's hybrid models:
       — 20% less weight - improves overall vehicle weight and fuel economy
       — 40% less volume - improves interior packaging efficiency
       — 10% more efficiency - smarter, better performance

    • Advantages over Lithium Ion batteries:
       — More compact
       — Greater power density
       — Lower vehicle weight

      Hyundai-developed Hybrid Blue Drive

    • Full parallel hybrid drive system
       — Honda Civic Hybrid is a "mild" parallel hybrid without a
           pure EV mode

    • Operates on electric motor, gasoline engine and combination
       of the two

    • 2.4L MPI Theta II Atkinson Cycle Engine
       — The Atkinson Cycle engine allows the 2.4-liter MPI Theta II engine run more efficiently by
increasing the combustion ratio and decreasing friction loss, resulting in improved
       — Multi-point injection (MPI), fuel efficient, reduced emissions
       — Horsepower: 166HP @ 6,000 rpm
       — Torque 154 lb-ft @ 4,250 rpm
       — DOHC 16 valve w/Dual Camshaft Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT)

    • Electric Motor (located inside the transmission)
       — The magic of Sonata Hybrid's superior engineering is
due, in large part, to integrating the electric motor with
           the six-speed automatic transmission
       — Horsepower: 40 HP (30 kW) @ 1,400 - 6,000 rpm
       — Torque: 151 lb-ft @ 0 - 1,400 rpm
       — Interior-Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor
       — Lithium-polymer battery (34 kW)

    • Hybrid System Performance Combined
       — Horsepower: 206HP @ 6,000 rpm / Torque: 195 lb-ft (Estimated)

    • +13 MPG improvement in city fuel economy vs. non-hybrid Sonata.

    • Highway fuel mileage is a KEY competitive strength for Sonata Hybrid. Most hybrid
competitors cannot use their electric motor assist at highway speeds, only at low speeds.
This is why most hybrids have higher city mileage than highway mileage. Sonata can use
electric motor assist all the way up to 74 mph — which is the key factor behind its 39 mpg
       highway mileage.

Sonata Hybrid delivers an eye-popping range on a full tank of fuel:

    • Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has a range up to 688 miles (1,107 km)
    • Toyota Camry Hybrid has a range up to 602 miles (969 km)
    • Toyota Prius has a range up to 607 miles (977 km)
    • Chevy Volt has a range of up to 375 miles (604 km)
    • Nissan Leaf has a range of up to 138 miles (222 km)

    Unique Design includes:

  • Lower side sills
  • Undercovers
  • Chrome lower molding
  • Blue Drive badge

    Hybrid Additional Features

    Regenerative Braking
Converting the kinetic energy into electrical energy rather than thermal energy through the friction brakes reduces the wear on the brake linings so they last longer.

Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) and Air Conditioning
    • The EPAS is independent of the engine so it provides assistance when the engine is not
running or is in electric drive mode.
    • The air conditioning also features an electrically driven compressor so the interior
temperature is maintained during engine-off driving and allows for more precise on-demand
       control, cutting fuel consumption.

    12-volt Battery
    • 12-volt battery mounted in
    • Used to start gasoline engine
    • Runs accessories when engine
       is off

For better overall weight distribution, the Hybrid's regular 12-volt battery is located in the trunk. It's found under the hood in regular Sonata models. In the Hybrid, this 12-volt battery serves the same purpose in supplying power to start the gasoline engine and run accessories like the radio or headlights when the engine is turned off and the car is parked.

    HSG (Hybrid Starter Generator)

8.5kW Hybrid Starter Generator (HSG) automatically restarts engine when pressure applied to accelerator and is used to charge the hybrid battery. One of the keys to hybrid efficiency is the ability to shut off the gasoline engine when it's not needed. This saves fuel and reduces emissions. When the power of the gasoline engine is needed for acceleration or to recharge the hybrid batteries, the Hybrid Starter Generator starts it.
