    POWERTRAIN TECHNOLOGY

    2012MY Elantra features a Nu 1.8L Dual- CVVT engine mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission and is classified as PZEV in some states.


    Key Engine Components:

       cast iron block
  • DOHC 16 valve
  • Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT)
      — Dual control is implemented to use a wider operation range
          of CVVT to improve torque with better optimized valve

    Elantra features new engine technologies to achieve 38 MPG highway and 148 horsepower.

  • Roller swing arm and Hydraulic Lash Adjusters (HLA) to deliver better fuel economy
  • Electronic throttle control (ETC) — Improves drivability and fuel efficiency due to optimized
        engine torque and transmission control
  • Offset crankshaft — Reduces friction loss during piston motion and improves fuel efficiency
  • Silent timing chain  — Maintenance-free silent chain system for improved durability and
        noise, vibration & harshness (NVH)
  • 2-Step variable induction system — Increases engine power and torque at high speeds


    In addition to the advancements in fuel economy, the new engine produces 7% better horsepower than its predecessor at 148 horsepower (ULEV), and has the best power-to-weight ratio in its class.
